The Syrinx display window
Partial repertoires of two neighboring song sparrows, shown as playable spectrograms above a live field recording.
This is a display of the partial repertoires of two neighboring song sparrows. The upper four rows of spectrograms are instantly playable, while the longer spectrogram at the bottom of the screen is a real time scrolling display of a field tape. Microphone input looks the same.
Windows in the display can be adjusted in appearance and size, recorded into, printed, and the whole display can be saved for quick retrieval later.
Sounds associated with each window can be edited, filtered with the sound tools, saved, played, and measured with time and frequency cursors.

Field recordings from other researchers are useful companions to a spectrogram analysis. Two public archives are Xeno canto and the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
